A Woman Called Truth

Heads Up Productions is delighted (that’s right we went there) to announce that A Woman Called Truth was a sell out production – an additional 15 seats were added to accommodate the large audiences.  We also added multiple tour dates to our performance schedule and had to turn down several other offers.

* Heads Up donated $165 to the Battered Women’s Shelter from the show’s proceeds.

“Well, children, where there’s so much racket, there must be something out of kilter.” So begins Sojourner Truth’s historic Ain’t I a Woman speech delivered here in Akron, Ohio in 1851; over a century later these controversial words continue to reverberate through society. A Woman Called Truth chronicles the life of this striking woman from the day she is ripped away from her family, through her struggle for freedom, to her emergence as a popular and respected figure fighting for abolition and women’s rights. A Woman Called Truth combines Sojourner’s actual words with authentic spirituals. It has been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the IUPUI Children’s Theatre Symposium, and the American Alliance for Theatre and Education.

Reviews of A Woman Called Truth

I just wanted to thank you and all the others who came to Greenview.  You did such a wonderful job and the kids thoroughly enjoyed A Woman Called Truth.  I have had a chance to get feedback from both the staff and the students and EVERYTHING has been very POSITIVE!!  The teachers were really impressed at how well the actors/actresses were able to keep the attention of the students and how informative the production was.  The kids really enjoyed the singing and the production as a whole. One young lady said to her teacher, “I forgot I was at Greenview.  I actually thought I was there!”  That is a true compliment and testament to what a wonderful job you all did!!”

Good, better, best?

Heads Up Productions is much like the Toy Story franchise – every time they do something, it just gets better and better.

Starting with an evident passion for theatre, a set of skills and talent pervades everything that they do.  Heads Up makes theatre for the mind, heart and soul. Their latest production of A Woman called Truth is no exception to this code of conduct.

The cast was comprised of India Burton as Sojourner Truth with Randall E. Hall, April Haugabrook, Tyler Hodges, Eliza Marie Jacops, Bobby Round and Kim Woodworth filling in as the multitude of other persons who were in Sojourner’s life.

This cast was where the production held its power. India, as the title character, had a solid and powerful characterization of Sojourner Truth, which was contrasted by the rest of the cast who quickly changed from person to person to person.

The story was told as Ms. Truth would have told it. All of the other persons seemed to be her recollection of them; though the ensemble was fully committed to the humanity of every character, never losing themselves in the story, instead staying true to each moment.

The set was simple, comprised of five wooden boxes. The lighting was also kept to a minimum. The simplicity of the set and lighting allowed them not to get in the way of the storytelling. It enhanced it. You saw everything – no holds barred. There was simple truth to be found in the story of A Woman Called Truth. I wait with anticipation for whatever Heads Up will bless us with next.
